Scarzello's flagship wine. Produced only in top vintages, sourced from the Vigna Merenda parcel in the heart of Sarmassa, one of Barolo’s most prized south–southwest facing sites. 2019 is widely regarded as a standout year for Barolo and it's so easy to see why with this one. Extraordinarily aromatic and full of life - the nose opens with cherry, plum and fig, intense violet and dried orange peel, liquorice, herbs and a touch of balsamic. On the palate, the wine is poised and finely structured, showing cherries, tobacco, tar, leather and spice. Tannins are present and mouth-filling, but fine and well-integrated. The wine is lively with bright acidity and the kind of complexity you only really see in top cru Barolo from a great vintage. The finish in long, and almost endless. Typical of Sarmassa, this is leans delicate and fresh in style, and is drinking fantastically now. With that said, there is ample room for the wine to develop, and will reward careful cellaring until 2035 and beyond.
Scarzello is a family-run estate based just below the Barolo castle, with roots in the village dating back to 1947. Now led by third-generation winemaker Federico Scarzello, the domaine farms just over four hectares across some of Barolo’s most respected sites, including Sarmassa, Paiagallo and Terlo. Scarzello is firmly traditional in outlook: organic farming, long macerations (sometimes over 50 days), ageing in large Slavonian oak, and focus on terroir expression over winemaking technique.
