Tasting
The 2023 Calrossie Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc delivers on all the hallmark traits that Marlborough Sauvignon is famous for; intense aromatics, fresh fruit flavours and a juicy, lingering acidity. This is the first Calrossie Sauvignon, and not from the Calrossie Vineyard, but rather the Rose Family Vineyard, where the vineyard was selected for its similarity in soil type. This wine is a beautiful example of Marlborough’s quintessential drop and will drink well from now but continue to reveal more with time through to late 2025.
Vineyard and vintage
100% Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit was sourced from the BioGro organic-certified Rose Family Vineyard in Omaka Valley, Marlborough. Chosen for its similarity to the Calrossie Vineyard (in the Awatere Valley), the soils are also wind-blown loess over rich clay. The 2023 growing season in Marlborough was an easy one, perhaps only made challenging by rain at harvest time. That said, good luck and a well- timed pick had us harvest the fruit at perfect ripeness and in great condition.
Vinification
The organic fruit was whole bunch pressed into stainless steel tank, after which it was inoculated with an organic yeast and fermented at cool temperatures to retain its freshness, aroma, and purity of fruit. No malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged on lees for 6 months prior to being racked and lightly filtered for bottling. Certified organic. Vegan friendly. Contains sulphites.
