Jean-Christophe Garnier’s La Roche comes from a small parcel of 70-year-old Chenin Blanc vines just south of Savennières, in the village of Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay. Farmed organically and biodynamically, the fruit is slowly pressed, fermented with native yeasts and aged for a year in old barrels, with no added sulphur.
Golden and slightly hazy in the glass, it opens with iodine, crushed stone and lemon peel, followed by cut apple, beeswax and fresh bread. The palate is intensely sapid and fresh, balancing Chenin’s natural breadth with saline minerality and long, driving acidity. Lean and textural, it’s a serious white that rewards attention - and like all of JC Garnier's output, is clean, precise and absolutely delicious.
