Here is one very unique wine with a very (long-winded &) unique back story!

Dominique Derain is the Burgundian vigneron who founded Domaine Derain and helped pioneer organics and natural winemaking in Burgundy since 1989. He has since passed on his estate to his apprentice Julien Altaber and his partner Carole Schwab who continue it to this day and also produce the 'Sextant' label of wines.

Since retiring Dominique has kept himself busy - he is still in Burgundy every year for vintage, but he's also making wines in Chile and other parts of France too.

This wine, Dr'ain Dr'ain, is Dominique's collab with Tutti Fruitti Ananás.

Tutti Frutti Ananas is yet another collab, between natural wine industry 'gods' Manuel of Vinyer de la Ruca, Zé Tafé of La Cave des Nomades, and Joachim of Domaine Carterole, to make the  kind of wines they like drinking by the Mediterranean down in Banyuls-sur-Mer. Banyuls is a place south of Perpignan/Collioure, on the coast, on the way down to Barcelona.

Together, these guys farm just a few hectares organically and make the wines at Les 9 Caves, a cooperative cellar they share in an old garage in the town’s centre.

There are many links here, but all you really need to know is this is an extremely rare and juicy blend, it's mostly Grenache, with just the tiniest amount of Syrah. It's from old bush vines grown on schist soils, it's whole-bunch fermented for two weeks before being pressed into a concrete tank to mature for eight months. Unfiltered, unfined, no added sulphites. This is a true Mediterranean red in its lightest, most gentle, most floral form. It's flavourful, sappy and incredibly moreish too.
