One of our favourite good-time wines has finally arrived in New Zealand!
Similar to the Portuguese Vinho Verde, Txakoli ("Cha-coal-ee") is a wine from Basque Spain, and is often seen in the Pintxos bars of San Sebastián being poured from a height, frothing into pint glasses, and served barside with fresh anchovies, jamon or salt-cod. Low alcohol, crisp and saline, with a bracing acidity means this is perfect for aperitifs, but perhaps Txakoli's most charming feature is the light effervescence which gives it an energetic, zippy, and super smashable quality.
Ameztoi's Txakoli is exemplary - it's certified organic, 100% Hondarrabi Zuri (others can be a mix of various non-indigenous grapes); from the first awarded Txakoli DOP Getario Txakolina.
Pale green, with aromas of green apples and plums, very light and bright, sharp and salty with biting acidity and a savoury saltiness as well as the classic Txakoli "spritz". A new summer classic!
